What Happens During Your In-Home Shutter Consultation

Todd Hansen

As you begin the window treatment buying process, some companies, like Sunburst, recommend an in-home consultation. By taking products to you, we can present how different window treatments would work in your room. Now you can create an informed decision by understanding how different products looks with the rest of the room.

But what happens during an in-home consultation? And how does showing you different products at your home allow you to better choose the perfect window treatment? Every shutter and window treatment company may have alternative methods for their in-home consultation, but here is what you will get during your Sunburst appointment.

Stepping Through A Typical In-Home Shutters Consultation

A couple viewing samples of window treatments.

Start by scheduling an appointment by calling your local representative. If you already have a shutter or window treatment in mind, like our Polywood® plantation shutter, then we will make sure to show you a variety of options for your preferred choice. We will also bring other options, so you can feel confident that your choice matches your ideas.

During the actual appointment, we’ll sit down and figure out what you want in a window treatment. We’ll look at your lighting, privacy, and energy efficiency ideas, and we’ll ask about hard-to-reach or specialty-shaped windows. Your representative will also inquire about how your windows are used and what ambiance you are looking to attain. The end target is to imagine what your windows will ultimately look like with the treatments installed.

You may have to see many different samples until we uncover the perfect window treatment for the room. Most clients want to try out a few different ideas, like comparing Polywood with our real-wood Ovation® shutters or finding the perfect stain to match the room. We’ll also find all the options available for the covering, like available colors, louver sizes, or hidden tilt-rods.

After you decide on a treatment, we’ll take the exact measurements of your windows. We generally measure the windows in every room in your home—even if you only need to fit treatments for select rooms. We do this because many of our clients ask to be able to order additional window treatments quickly. At the end of the appointment, we will walk you through a detailed, written quote, so there are no hidden costs on your invoice.

Red Flags For A Poor In-Home Shutter Consultation

While we are convinced that Sunburst will perform an easy and enjoyable in-home consultation, there are some things you should never experience from any window treatment company. It should go without saying, the quality of the consultation usually equals the quality of the product.

Primarily, your salesperson should treat your home with respect. He or she should show up when promised, ready to present, and offer to prevent floor scuffs with shoe booties. Your consultant should always give you product and company literature and pricing information.

When it comes to price, you should be given a detailed written quote. Don’t accept a guesstimate, scribbled on a product brochure or the back of a business card. And don’t take pricing information before they take any window measurements. You should always be able to follow how much product and installation should cost. Finally, check references and online reviews as you get ready to order.
